Access to Information at CCH
Cornwall Community Hospital routinely provides information to the public through its Administration, its Communication Office, and its website. A request for information contained in hospital records can also be made under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act(FIPPA) however; it is not necessary to file an official request for information that is routinely released to the public. Acute Stroke Program celebrates first Anniversary
The Acute Stroke Program launched at Cornwall Community Hospital one year ago and has served 46 patients, improving outcomes with timely treatment.  The Acute stroke team is a multidisciplinary one including Emergency Physician, the Neurologist (via video conferencing) Nursing from Emergency Department and the Critical Care unit, Pharmacy, Laboratory, CT department and Respiratory staff; all of which play a role in improving the outcomes of patients who suffered a stroke.

PIP improving access to care
LEAN methodology is applicable in so many sectors with one goal in mind; to eliminate waste and optimize efficiency. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care rolled out the Process Improvement Plan (PIP) based on this LEAN methodology and Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is one of the hospitals within the province participating in the initiative.

Shortest CT wait time in the province
Cornwall Community Hospital is proud to have the shortest CT wait time in the province of only 12 days. The wait is measured from the time the scan is ordered by the physician to the time the scan is performed.  The provincial average wait time for this diagnostic test is 42 days and the target wait time for a CT scan is 28 days.

Housekeeping committed to patient safety with new monitoring tool
Housekeeping staff at Cornwall Community Hospital now have a new tool to help them make sure the room is clean: it’s called the Clean-Trace ATP Surface Test. “We were always doing a good job with our terminal cleanings but this tool reassures us of that, and allows us to do it even better” says Lisette Laperle, manager of housekeeping services.

Clostridium Difficile update at CCH
The front page and lead stories in the news the past few weeks regarding C. difficile outbreaks in the Niagara and other regions of the province is a reminder that this bacterium can be deadly. Cornwall Community Hospital is pleased that we have experienced 1 case of C. difficile in the past 90 days. We commend the staff and physicians at the hospital for ensuring that infection prevention and control measures are adhered to and that we are diligent with surveillance activities.

Shorter ER Wait Times for Cornwall Residents
Ontario is helping to reduce the time Cornwall-area residents spend in emergency rooms.  This year, the Cornwall Community Hospital – McConnell Avenue Site is receiving $813,200 to further reduce ER wait times.

Patient Declaration of Values: Thank you for your participation!
In 2010 the Province of Ontario introduced the Excellent Care for All Act (ECFAA) which requires all hospitals to have a publically available Patient Declaration of Values. Your feedback was combined with that of others and together resulted in the final version of the Declaration.

New program created to alleviate local hospital pressures
The Champlain LHIN is investing in a new ‘assess and restore’ program in Cornwall, adding health-care beds for seniors. The program will prepare patients to return home safely after a hospitalization or emergency room visit. It will also prevent premature admissions to long-term care homes and relieve pressures at Cornwall Community Hospital.

Respiratory & Heart Failure Rehabilitation Program

If your breathing troubles impede your daily living activities, then exercise rehab may be for you. How successful is an exercise rehab program? Just ask Dawne Secours who was admitted into the program in April of 2010 after spending two months in the hospital when she was diagnosed as having COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). “Before beginning the program I rarely left the house and I wasn’t mobile like I am now.” Secours says.

New Mammography Department
 
After spending 23 years in the same work space Kathy LeGallais, charge technologist of Cornwall Community Hospital’s (CCH) mammography department welcomed a change of scenery. CCH’s mammography department was recently relocated to a newly renovated space within the hospital, due to construction activities involved with the Capital Redevelopment Project.

Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is pleased to provide for you and your loved ones ‘Care Mail’, a free service which will allow you to stay in touch with your loved one during their hospital stay.
 
With flu season approaching ‘Care Mail’ is a great alternative to unnecessary visits to the hospital, while still allowing a patients family and friends to show their support to their loved one during their hospital stay.

CCH unveils draft strategic plan
 

With the support of the Champlain LHIN, the Province of Ontario and our community, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is currently undergoing the largest hospital redevelopment in forty years. As part of the planning process for our eventual transition to our new facilities we have developed a strategic plan which will guide the hospital’s direction for the next five years.

A key component in the development of this plan is the engagement and consultation of community partners. On the morning of Monday, September 13th hospital representatives met with community partners to provide an overview of CCH’s draft strategic plan and to retrieve feedback, input, and evoke discussion.

Safety measures implemented during construction activities
 
 
Due to safety precautions during special construction activities of the Capital Redevelopment Project, patients from the South wing of all floors will be temporarily relocated throughout the hospital on Thursday, September 9th between the hours of 4:30am and 7:30am. Air handling units are being lifted to the roof of the hospital and relocating patients during these activities is a standard and common practice in patient safety. Once the lift is complete patients will return to their rooms. During this time the main emergency department entrance will be closed off and all traffic will be redirected to the Janet MacDonnell Pavilion entrance.

Restorative Care Program Opens in Cornwall to Improve Care, Ease Pressures on Hospital


St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre has opened eight new beds for clients from the Cornwall Community Hospital, who no longer need acute care and await an ‘alternate level of care’ (ALC).

The goal of the Restorative Care Program is to strengthen and condition patients to a degree of independence that will allow them to be discharged to the community (e.g. home, retirement residence). It is expected the program will prevent admissions to long-term care homes.

CT Scan Services
 
 
 
 
The capital construction project underway at the Hospital requires us to relocate our current CT Suite into a new location on the McConnell Avenue site. This involves the dismantling of the CT Scanner and re-assembly in the new location. Unfortunately this will take approximately 4-5 weeks given the nature of the equipment, required testing and recalibration.

CCH Board & Medical Staff Outraged by Limited System Capacity for Elderly

While Cornwall Community Hospital braces for further surgical cancellations the Board and Medical Staff at the hospital ask the question: “when will the system show signs of hope for these elderly patients?”

“Our seniors deserve quality care designed to meet their unique needs” said Dr. Garret Foley, President of the Cornwall Academy of Medicine. “While these patients no longer require acute care they should be entitled to quality care either within the community or in a long term care setting.”

Addressing the Challenge – Our Commitment to Patient Services and Performance

Despite the unrelenting financial challenges experienced since its inception Cornwall Community Hospital has a plan which will result in a balanced budget by year end. A key factor in developing the plan was the recent announcement by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care increasing the funding allocation by $5 million each year.

After finding millions of dollars in efficiencies and going through the exercise of an external Peer Review, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) received a 5 million dollar funding adjustment today from the Ministry of Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

External Peer Review
In January of 2009, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) announced that they would be participating in an external peer review, conducted by the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, and led by Dr. Chris Carruthers, former Chief of Staff of the Ottawa Hospital. The report was released to the public on Wednesday evening however CCH had already begun to implement the recommendations directed to them.

Cornwall Community Hospital goes 100% smoke-free!
Cornwall, Ontario – April 1st 2009 marks a healthy change for Cornwall Community Hospital as it becomes a 100% smoke-free environment. The McConnell Avenue site has been smoke-free for one (1) year and as of April the smoke free policy will extend to the Second Street site as well.
