Ontario Celebrates Grand Opening of Leading-Edge Centre at Cornwall Community Hospital
 
 
 John Fraser, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, along with other local dignitaries was at the new centre in Cornwall today to mark the significant milestone. The new centre combines services that were previously offered at three different sites in Cornwall and will reduce wait times while providing patients in Eastern Ontario the following: Child and Youth Mental Health Services, Community Withdrawal Management Services, Assertive Community Treatment: (ACT), Adult Counselling Treatment, Mental Health, Crisis Team/Peer Support, Geriatric Mental Health Services, Addiction Services.

CCH Celebrate Their Dedicated Doctors on “Doctors Day”
 
 
May 1st is recognized by the provincial government as the official day of appreciation for Ontario’s medical profession. The date was chosen to mark the birthday of one of Canada’s first female physicians, Dr. Emily Stowe. To celebrate 2017 Doctors’ Day the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) put kids in charge of recognizing the province’s 29,000 practicing doctors by encouraging them to colour an activity sheet and to express “What my MD means to me?”

CCH Celebrating Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Month
 
Cornwall Hospital has been a designated Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) hospital since June 2013. In an effort to increase organ and tissue donation through TGLN’s Routine Notification Program, Cornwall Hospital staff report impending patient deaths to TGLN. If a person is eligible to donate, a specially-trained coordinator will work closely with hospital staff and physicians to discuss donation with the family.

Ten Year Anniversary for Respiratory and Heart Failure Rehabilitation Program
 
This February, during Heart Health month, Cornwall Community Hospital marks the ten year anniversary of its Respiratory and Heart Failure Rehabilitation Program.
In addition to short-term treatment and rehabilitation, the program teaches patients with heart failure or respiratory disorders to achieve an improved quality of life through lifestyle changes and exercise training.

As a proud “Partner for Life” with Canadian Blood Services, CCH will be sponsoring a blood drive January 3rd 2017 at the Cornwall Civic Complex. The holiday season is especially taxing on blood with an increase in motor vehicle accidents due to bad weather and extra travel during at this time of year.

Women and Children’s Health celebrating patient safety milestone
MOREOB (Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently) is a comprehensive performance improvement program focused on creating a culture of patient safety in obstetrical units across the country. The Women and Children’s Health department at Cornwall Hospital had their MOREOB Year 9 launch/education day in September with education stations providing additional learning opportunities on labour support, shoulder dystocia (this is when labour is obstructed after the delivery of the head, the anterior shoulder of the infant cannot pass easily) and neonatal resuscitation.

Local Surgeon’s Abstract Published in Canadian Journal of Surgery
 
Dr. Wasseem Moussa, a general surgeon, immigrated from Egypt in 1989 and came to Cornwall in 2000. Recently, Dr. Moussa had an abstract published in the Canadian Journal of Surgery about research he did here at Cornwall Hospital. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a set of perioperative protocols that expedites recovery from surgery.

New Community Addiction and Mental Health Centre
 
The new one level, 22 000 square feet building located at the north end of the Cornwall Hospital property is ready for occupancy and the moves are scheduled during the month of October. Cornwall Hospital getting ready to go smoke free
 
 
On January 1st 2018, all hospitals in the province of Ontario will be mandated to be smoke-free, under the Smoke Free Ontario Act. Until January 1st 2018 hospitals are permitted to identify one designated smoking area on the grounds for patients, employees and visitors.

Falls are the leading cause of injury for seniors and also contribute to a significant burden on the healthcare system. Direct healthcare costs for falls in Canada are estimated at $2 billion annually.

New Sound for Cornwall Hospital – First patient rings Chemo Bell
 
 A sound that has never been heard before at Cornwall Hospital was heard for the first time last Friday, July 15, when Lillian Coleman was the first to ring the bell in newly renovated Chemotherapy Unit. The bell is rung at the end of a patient’s chemotherapy treatment session and is usually a sign of hope for the other patients who are witnesses.

A shift in focus benefits children at Day Treatment Program
 
 
 The Cornwall Hospital Children’s Day Treatment Program is a comprehensive service for children who experience mental health issues and/or behavioural challenges. The children who attend this program will benefit from the generous donation made by an Ottawa-based company. “We are grateful and honoured to receive this donation. The children in our program can use these tablets for educational and therapeutic purposes,” says Natasha Scott, Supervisor for the Child and Youth Mental Health Services.

Community hubs provide a central access point for a range of needed health and social services, along with cultural, recreational, and green spaces to nourish community life. No community hub is like another, as each brings together a variety of different services, programs and/or social and cultural activities to reflect local community needs. It is this diversity of activity that allows community hubs to play a critical role in building economic and social cohesion in the community. Cornwall Hospital and Foundation celebrate opening of Chemotherapy Unit
Donors, staff and stakeholders gathered at Cornwall Hospital today to see the newly renovated area on level 5 which is now the home of our local chemotherapy unit.

Chemotherapy, also known as systemic therapy, is a service that the community has been requesting for some time. It was identified in the hospital’s 2010-2015 strategic plan. “It feels great to deliver on such an impactful commitment,” expressed Jeanette Despatie, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cornwall Hospital. “Donors, staff and our health care partners should all be proud today, we know that this service will have a tremendous impact on the lives of patients and families across our community.”

Ontario is investing $6 million in mental health services to help an estimated additional 4,000 children and youth, and their families each year. Approximately one in five children and youth in Ontario experience a mental health challenge. Health Links: Now Helping Complex Patients Receive Coordinated Care

Health Link partners celebrated the official launch of the local Health Link program at the Stormont, Glengarry, Cornwall & Akwesasne Health Link Steering Committee meeting on November 20, 2015, at the Centre de sante communautaire de l’Estrie, at 841 Sydney Street Cornwall. Christine Penney, Vice President of Community Programs at the Cornwall Community Hospital is pleased with the progress, “In our first two weeks, we have started to help seven patients receive coordinated care. These are patients who were at risk of falling through the cracks and not receiving the care they need,” she explained.

Breaking New Ground for Addictions and Mental Health Services in Cornwall Area
Community partners, politicians, hospital staff, local contractors and foundation donors gathered today to mark a ceremonious occasion at the former ambulance site beside the Cornwall Community Hospital. The official construction commencement of the Addictions and Community Mental Health co-location project was celebrated with a ground breaking ceremony today which included a commemorative shovel entering the ground.

New Triage Queuing System in the Emergency Department
CCH has recently installed an electronic numbered queuing system in the Emergency Department for the triaging process. When arriving, patients will see a touch screen where they are asked a few preliminary questions. A ticket is issued and in turn, the patient is placed in a virtual line. This allows the patient to have a seat, knowing that their number is in the queue to be called and seen by the triage nurse.

Midwifery on the rise at CCH
With an increase of 140% in midwifery births in the past year, CCH is well on its way of “delivering” on one of its goals of becoming the birthplace of choice in Cornwall and the surrounding area. Cornwall Hospital is the only hospital outside of Ottawa with 24/7 pediatric coverage, a definite attraction for new mothers, when concerned for the baby’s well-being after birth. Midwives are also making their way into the OR to support the mother and baby during a cesarean section. Seven local midwives have privileges here at CCH.

Cornwall Mental Health Gets a Family Advisory Council
Christine Penney, Vice-President of Community Programs at the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH), announced today that the hospital is establishing a Mental Health Family Advisory Council. “This important initiative is being implemented in cooperation with the Cornwall & District Family Support Group,” said Penney. “It is the culmination of two years of bridge-building between the hospital and family caregivers in the region we serve.”

CCH revisits visiting hours with a patient centered focus
Every evening at eight o’clock sharp, a page overhead is heard at Cornwall Hospital (CCH) stating that visiting hours are over and will resume at eleven o’clock the next morning. That page will soon be replaced with an open door policy, allowing visiting at any time, to the patient’s preference. Beginning July 1st, Cornwall Hospital will join a growing number of hospitals introducing flexibility to patient visiting.

CCH has been a member of the Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) since June of 2013 and participates in Ontario’s Routine Notification Program by reporting impending patient deaths so that their specially trained staff can identify potential donors and approach families to re-affirm consent.  “One organ and tissue donor can save up to eight lives and transform as many as 75 others, explains Janice Beitel, Director of Hospital Programs, Education and Professional Practice and Education at TGLN. “Just one more donor can mean everything for the family of someone on the waiting list. The hospitals joining us in implementing Routine Notification are helping us to save lives.”

A Lead for Life
Cornwall, September 25, 2014 – Collaboration is a force multiplier. The Ontario government launched Ontario Comprehensive Mental Health and Addiction Strategy three years ago. The focus of the first phase of the strategy is to create a more responsive and integrated system for children and youth with mental health issues. The strategy included a commitment to strengthen and improve the community-based system of mental health supports. This commitment resulted in the Moving on Mental Health action plan.

New Telemetry System Doesn’t Miss a Beat
Cornwall - July 24, 2014 - Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is keeping the patient’s best interest at heart. The hospital has once again leveraged its wireless network capabilities to enhance the functionality of its telemetry services. Sale of Surplus Site to Help Fund Hospital Project
Cornwall, March 24, 2014 - The Cornwall Community Hospital announced today that it has sold its property at 510-520 Second Street East.

The three acre site, along with all buildings as well as an adjacent 1.5 acre parking lot, has been purchased by an Ottawa development group for $2 million. Proceeds from the sale will be directed to help fund a project that will see the Hospital move towards electronic patient records.

Ophthalmology at Cornwall Community Hospital Looking Better Than Ever
Seeing is believing. The six new operating rooms at Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH), which opened in April 2013, offer a wide range of procedures using the latest, cutting-edge surgical equipment. One specialty area that is excelling in this new space is ophthalmology. “The equipment and OR space at Cornwall Community Hospital are appealing to any surgeon, Dr. Youssef and I feel proud to serve this community and feel lucky to have the best equipment to do surgery,” exclaims Dr. Christine Seuss, Chief of the Ophthalmology department at CCH.

Rapid Response Proves Vital in Stroke Cases
Cornwall, December 17, 2013 - On the last Sunday of July, a 55 year old woman recognized she was having numbness on her right side so decided to call for medical attention. Little did she know her quick decision would have such a drastic impact on her life, as she was unaware she was suffering from the initial stages of a stroke. When the ambulance arrived paramedics promptly diagnosed her onset symptoms and immediately took her to Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) for further examination. Within minutes the patient was given the clot busting medication “tissue plasminogen activator” (tPA).

CCH Makes a “Push” for Safe Practices
Cornwall, November 25, 2013 - On Tuesday, November 5, the Women and Children’s Health (WCH) Department of Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) presented “Push” for safe practices; an education and training seminar designed to enhance collaboration between staff and highlight some modern obstetrical practices being introduced in today’s leading health care facilities. In order to explain the Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently (MOREOB) and Neo-natal Resuscitation Programs (NRP), speakers from the hospital and Salus Global - a global leader and innovator in the delivery of patient safety solutions – presented a series of valuable techniques and practices to improve interpersonal communication, teamwork, and overall patient satisfaction in the unit.

Phase 3 Contruction update
Level 1 Cafeteria, Foundation offices, Learning Centre, and Patient Registration is now being constructed and will be attached to the front of the new west addition. This area is scheduled to be handed over in summer 2014. Features of these new areas include a cafeteria that welcomes an abundance of natural light and plenty of seating for staff and visitors along with a larger serving area. Continuous Improvement with Lean Methodology Achieving “Amazing Results”
Cornwall - October 31, 2013 - In 2011, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) introduced a culture of continuous improvement (CI) to its organization. CI is not a program with a predetermined start and end date that will be completed when one problem is resolved. It is a way of thinking that is designed to be used every day to make the hospital a more efficient work environment for years to come. Everything from how patients receive their food, to analyzing the steps a nurse takes to file a patient’s records are considered when using the CI or “Lean” thought process. It’s all about finding ways to eliminate needless steps, or “waste,” which hinders the productivity of staff.

“Community’s Magnet” Attracts Over 750 Patients
Cornwall - August 9, 2013 – A picture’s worth a thousand words. The MRI Suite in The Rose and David Bloomfield Diagnostic Centre of Excellence at Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) has been working non-stop ever since it became operational in April. Inside its protective copper-lined chamber rests the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine which continues to be the source of so much pride within the community. The machine’s heartbeat lets out a steady “hum” to let you know it’s ready for the next patient.

Community Withdrawal Management Notice
The Cornwall Community Hospital has been overseeing the operations of a residential Withdrawal Management Service in Cornwall since 1987. In December 2012, the Champlain LHIN Board of Directors approved the service change for the Cornwall Community Hospital‘s Withdrawal Management Services from an overnight residential care program, to a community home based and day program model that has been successful in other rural and small urban communities across Ontario.

Improving Stroke Care at CCH
Cornwall, June 28, 2013 - Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is proud to be designated as a licensed Telestroke site authorized by the Ontario Stroke Network (OSN). Telestroke is a two-way audiovisual linkup between a neurologist in a stroke centre and an emergency room physician. It is an approach to treating vascular strokes that allows a neurologist to provide remote treatment (from a tertiary site at a hospital in Ontario) for a stroke patient. The goal is for the neurologist to be able to talk to the patient and the physician about what symptoms they have experienced, evaluate the patient’s motor skills, view a computed tomography (CT) scan, make a diagnosis and prescribe treatment.

Organ Donation Referral Program Expands to CCH

Disposition of Second Street Properties
Cornwall, Ontario 2013-06-07 – Phase III of the Cornwall Community Hospital Redevelopment Project is well underway with the demolition and renovations necessary to prepare the McConnell Avenue site for the consolidation of all hospital services. This final phase is scheduled for completion by fall 2014, at which time all services and programs will be transferred from the Second Street Site.

Total Joint Assessment Clinic
May 31, 2013 – Arthritic hip and knee pain is very common among older adults and must be managed appropriately. This sentiment is echoed in the basement office of Madeleine MacDonell, Physiotherapist, at the Cornwall Community Hospital. MacDonell is the assessor for the Total Joint Assessment Clinic (TJAC) of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), the Hip and Knee Replacement Program (HKRP), and the Pre-habilitation Program located at the Second Street Site.

The Emergency Department Makes It’s Move
April 22, 2013- As part of the Redevelopment Project at Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH), the Emergency Department (ED) on the south side of the McConnell Avenue site will be closed as of Friday, April 26, 2013 at 0200hrs. All emergency care services will be delivered in the new addition to the hospital, and will be accessible from the north parking lot at the McConnell site.

The Bloomfields whose gift remained anonymous for years will now leave a long-lasting legacy in the city. Dialysis Unit Celebrates 10 Years of Service
Dialysis is a treatment that cleans the blood and removes waste from the body when a person’s kidneys have failed.  As a result of a successful local fundraising campaign, “Dig Deep for Dialysis”, the Cornwall General Hospital Dialysis Unit opened as a satellite of the Ottawa Hospital in September 2002.

In the 1980s, all hospitals were struggling on how to deal with abuse cases coming into the emergency department. What started as a provincial initiative, the Cornwall program opened its doors in 1992 at the former Cornwall General Hospital. A senior friendly hospital responds to seniors’ physical and mental health needs, promotes good health, is safe and supports seniors, their families and caregivers to be fully involved in the person’s care. The Senior Friendly Strategy is a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) initiative. CCH is currently in the planning stages of the “Senior Friendly” strategy with goals to change the way care is delivered, and the environment it is delivered in. New Medi Drop program offers a safe way to dispose of medication
The Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) are pleased to announce the launch of Medi Drop, a new program that offers a safe and anonymous way for the public to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medication. Area residents can now drop prescription or over-the-counter medications that they no longer want or need into secure Medi Drop boxes that have been placed throughout the City of Cornwall.

As part of a Green Team initiative to help reduce costs as well as its carbon footprint, CCH has introduced a new technology that will reduce CCH’s need to transport and dispose of this waste. CCH is the first hospital in Ontario to install such a machine supplied by Food Cycle Science, Canada.

Acute Stroke Program celebrates first Anniversary
The Acute Stroke Program launched at Cornwall Community Hospital one year ago and has served 46 patients, improving outcomes with timely treatment.  The Acute stroke team is a multidisciplinary one including Emergency Physician, the Neurologist (via video conferencing) Nursing from Emergency Department and the Critical Care unit, Pharmacy, Laboratory, CT department and Respiratory staff; all of which play a role in improving the outcomes of patients who suffered a stroke.

Shortest CT wait time in the province
Cornwall Community Hospital is proud to have the shortest CT wait time in the province of only 12 days. The wait is measured from the time the scan is ordered by the physician to the time the scan is performed.  The provincial average wait time for this diagnostic test is 42 days and the target wait time for a CT scan is 28 days.

Housekeeping committed to patient safety with new monitoring tool
Housekeeping staff at Cornwall Community Hospital now have a new tool to help them make sure the room is clean: it’s called the Clean-Trace ATP Surface Test. “We were always doing a good job with our terminal cleanings but this tool reassures us of that, and allows us to do it even better” says Lisette Laperle, manager of housekeeping services.

Clostridium Difficile update at CCH
The front page and lead stories in the news the past few weeks regarding C. difficile outbreaks in the Niagara and other regions of the province is a reminder that this bacterium can be deadly. Cornwall Community Hospital is pleased that we have experienced 1 case of C. difficile in the past 90 days. We commend the staff and physicians at the hospital for ensuring that infection prevention and control measures are adhered to and that we are diligent with surveillance activities.

New program created to alleviate local hospital pressures
The Champlain LHIN is investing in a new ‘assess and restore’ program in Cornwall, adding health-care beds for seniors. The program will prepare patients to return home safely after a hospitalization or emergency room visit. It will also prevent premature admissions to long-term care homes and relieve pressures at Cornwall Community Hospital.

Respiratory & Heart Failure Rehabilitation Program

If your breathing troubles impede your daily living activities, then exercise rehab may be for you. How successful is an exercise rehab program? Just ask Dawne Secours who was admitted into the program in April of 2010 after spending two months in the hospital when she was diagnosed as having COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). “Before beginning the program I rarely left the house and I wasn’t mobile like I am now.” Secours says.

CCH unveils draft strategic plan
 

With the support of the Champlain LHIN, the Province of Ontario and our community, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is currently undergoing the largest hospital redevelopment in forty years. As part of the planning process for our eventual transition to our new facilities we have developed a strategic plan which will guide the hospital’s direction for the next five years.

A key component in the development of this plan is the engagement and consultation of community partners. On the morning of Monday, September 13th hospital representatives met with community partners to provide an overview of CCH’s draft strategic plan and to retrieve feedback, input, and evoke discussion.

Safety measures implemented during construction activities
 
 
Due to safety precautions during special construction activities of the Capital Redevelopment Project, patients from the South wing of all floors will be temporarily relocated throughout the hospital on Thursday, September 9th between the hours of 4:30am and 7:30am. Air handling units are being lifted to the roof of the hospital and relocating patients during these activities is a standard and common practice in patient safety. Once the lift is complete patients will return to their rooms. During this time the main emergency department entrance will be closed off and all traffic will be redirected to the Janet MacDonnell Pavilion entrance.

Restorative Care Program Opens in Cornwall to Improve Care, Ease Pressures on Hospital


St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre has opened eight new beds for clients from the Cornwall Community Hospital, who no longer need acute care and await an ‘alternate level of care’ (ALC).

The goal of the Restorative Care Program is to strengthen and condition patients to a degree of independence that will allow them to be discharged to the community (e.g. home, retirement residence). It is expected the program will prevent admissions to long-term care homes.

CT Scan Services
 
 
 
 
The capital construction project underway at the Hospital requires us to relocate our current CT Suite into a new location on the McConnell Avenue site. This involves the dismantling of the CT Scanner and re-assembly in the new location. Unfortunately this will take approximately 4-5 weeks given the nature of the equipment, required testing and recalibration.

CCH Board & Medical Staff Outraged by Limited System Capacity for Elderly

While Cornwall Community Hospital braces for further surgical cancellations the Board and Medical Staff at the hospital ask the question: “when will the system show signs of hope for these elderly patients?”

“Our seniors deserve quality care designed to meet their unique needs” said Dr. Garret Foley, President of the Cornwall Academy of Medicine. “While these patients no longer require acute care they should be entitled to quality care either within the community or in a long term care setting.”

Mohawk Council of Akwesasne

On Friday, April 16th at the Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne made their second installment of $250,000 towards their 1 Million dollar contribution to Cornwall Community Hospital capital redevelopment project. Despite the unrelenting financial challenges experienced since its inception Cornwall Community Hospital has a plan which will result in a balanced budget by year end. A key factor in developing the plan was the recent announcement by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care increasing the funding allocation by $5 million each year.

$ 5 Million Annual Funding Adjustment


After finding millions of dollars in efficiencies and going through the exercise of an external Peer Review, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) received a 5 million dollar funding adjustment today from the Ministry of Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

CCH Wants to “See Red” at Hospital Sponsored Blood Drive

Every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood. CCH Dealing with High Patient Volumes
With an increase in Emergency Department (ED) visits, physicians’ offices being closed over the holidays and strains of gastroenteritis, influenza and pneumonia circulating in the community, Cornwall Community Hospital is at its busiest with an occupancy rate of 126 per cent.

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is held on September 10th each year. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented. Disseminating information, improving education and training, and decreasing stigmatization are important tasks in such an endeavour.

CCH: first hospital in Canada to use food cycler!
As part of a Green Team initiative to help reduce costs as well as its carbon footprint, CCH has introduced a new technology that will reduce CCH’s need to transport and dispose of this waste. CCH is the first hospital in Ontario to install such a machine supplied by Food Cycle Science, Canada.

External Peer Review
In January of 2009, Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) announced that they would be participating in an external peer review, conducted by the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, and led by Dr. Chris Carruthers, former Chief of Staff of the Ottawa Hospital. The report was released to the public on Wednesday evening however CCH had already begun to implement the recommendations directed to them.

Cornwall, Ontario – April 1st 2009 marks a healthy change for Cornwall Community Hospital as it becomes a 100% smoke-free environment. The McConnell Avenue site has been smoke-free for one (1) year and as of April the smoke free policy will extend to the Second Street site as well.
